The Albion, Aberteifi Cardigan

The Albion Aberteifi, situated on the banks of the River Teifi in Cardigan, Wales, is a distinctive hotel that seamlessly blends maritime heritage with contemporary design. Housed in a grade II-listed former warehouse, the hotel pays homage to the town's seafaring past, notably the 1819 voyage of the Albion ship, which settlers from Cardigan to New Brunswick. The Albion is the creation of the dynamic husband-and-wife team James Lynch and Sian Tucker, and the latest addition to the nearby 200-acre fforest farm.

On arrival you're greeted with wonderful, super helpful staff who run the hotel in a very relaxed but efficient way! The barmen & I talked at length (for a non drinker) which gave me a great insight into what he’s created. The Albion Bar is a standout in rural West Wales, championing the best of Welsh produce and cutting-edge cocktail craft.

Headed by David Harrison, the bar pushes boundaries with techniques like fat-washing mezcal with chipotle oil in the Smoky Margarita, or crafting tinctures and infusions for the Pain Au Chocolat Old Fashioned. You are sure to find plenty of classics, twists on classics, and new inventions.

It’s an unexpected treat, seamlessly complementing the area’s exceptional local food and clearly inspiring its young, enthusiastic team. If you’re after something simpler but just as appealing, they’ve got their exclusive hazy IPA, Cwrw Haf - brewed in collaboration with Crafty Devil, and Cwrw Fforest, a local favourite from Mantle Brewery just over the road.

/Design and Ambience

The hotel's interiors are a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Reclaimed timber, seasoned over a decade, lines the walls, creating a warm cabin-like atmosphere reminiscent of a ship's quarters. Antique furnishings and maritime artifacts further enhance this nautical theme. The bedrooms, described as 'snug, dark and moody,' evoke the feel of a captain’s cabin, offering guests a unique and immersive experience.

/Location and Surroundings

Positioned directly on the River Teifi, The Albion provides picturesque views and a serene environment. Guests can enjoy the tranquil riverside setting while being just a short walk from Cardigan's historic market town, known for its rich history and vibrant local culture. The hotel's proximity to attractions such as the Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve and nearby beaches like Mwnt and Poppit Sands, makes it an ideal base for exploring West Wales.

/Amenities and Services

The Albion offers a range of amenities designed to enhance guest comfort. There are twelve rooms in total, four per floor, each named after a passenger and their trade – tailor, carpenter, farmer, blacksmith - who left on the good ship Albion in 1819. The Galley Bar, located in the lobby provides a cozy spot for relaxation, serving cocktails like the Albion Collins and local ales from the nearby Mantle Brewery.

Breakfast is served in the first-floor lounge, featuring an east-meets-west & scandi selection of sourdough, charcuterie, cheeses, smoked fish, pickles, Kraut, kimchi & boiled eggs, complemented by freshly brewed coffee. The hotel also plans to open a restaurant, Yr Odyn, in a former lime kiln, promising a menu inspired by local produce and international influences.

And just across the river is Pizzatipi, another James and Sian venture in a former boatyard converted into a small pub, a large tepee, a wood-fired oven, with indoor and outdoor riverside seating. A casual option for drinks, pizza & snacks by the river, or cosy fire in the tipi.

/fforest farm

A 1/2 hour walk along the river & into the nature reserve will bring you to The Albion sister site, fforest farm. Set over 200 acres of land, a wide variety of accommodation has been placed amongst woodland, fields and farm buildings.

Chose from the luxury of a renovated Georgian farmhouse and split level crog lofts, beautifully furnished geodesic domes or cabin style garden shacs and hill shacs. All with outstanding views of the Welsh countryside.

At the heart of the farm is one of Wales’ smallest pubs, ‘Y Bwythn’ which is the oldest building on the farm. Ask at reception when the best time to visit the farm for the pub or restaurant.

All food at fforest is cooked on site, using locally sourced produce whenever possible. The team at fforest grow most of their vegetable and brew their own beer. Specialities include wood smoked and barbecued meats & fish, and pizzas & bread from the stonebake oven.
